Agnico Eagle Mines
Agnico Eagle Mines Limited is a senior Canadian gold mining company that has produced precious metals since 1957 and is now the largest producer of gold in Canada. The Company’s operating mines are located in Canada, Australia, Finland and Mexico. It has a pipeline of high-quality exploration and development projects in these countries as well as in the United States and Colombia. Agnico Eagle, which employs more than 16,000 people worldwide, is a partner of choice within the mining industry, recognized globally for its leading environmental, social and governance practices.
For over 60 years, Agnico Eagle has consistently stayed true to its mission to build a high quality, easy-tounderstand business – one that generates superior long-term returns for shareholders, while creating a great place to work for employees and making a positive contribution to the communities and countries in which it operates.
The Company has built a strong culture of responsible behaviour, achieving high standards of sustainability performance and distinguishing itself as a responsible miner. By operating with respect for others, building trust, being reliable and sharing opportunities, Agnico Eagle makes mining work for everyone – employees, stakeholders and communities, including the Indigenous communities where it operates. The Company believes that responsible growth can bring prosperity for the benefit of future generations.
Summary of Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Performance
Agnico Eagle Mines started implementing TSM in 2011 and rigorously applies TSM best practices across its operating mines globally while striving to improve overall performance year after year. Each site has dedicated personnel to ensure implementation and monitoring of TSM protocols and best practices. Agnico Eagle’s TSM performance is part of its overall approach to sustainability. TSM requirements are integrated into the Company’s Risk Management and Monitoring System (RMMS) that also encompasses other international standards and frameworks such as:
• The World Gold Council’s Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMP);
• The International Cyanide Management Institute’s International Cyanide Management Code
(ICMC); and
• The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR).
External Verification at Meliadine Mine
One external verification was performed at Agnico Eagle for 2022. Meliadine Mine has achieved level AA and above for all indicators of all TSM protocols.
Agnico Eagle’s TSM external verification was included in an integrated audit that also contained audit requirements from the RGMP, the VPSHR and the Company’s RMMS. Integration of these four audits was a first for Agnico Eagle and places the Company amongst the mining industry’s precursors in applying this improved practice. Audits were performed face-to-face, except for a few interviews, which were completed through video conference.
Annual Self-Assessments
Annual self-assessments were performed at Meadowbank Complex, LaRonde Complex, Goldex, Kittilä, Pinos Altos, La India and its Toronto head office. Agnico Eagle’s overall results for 2022 were strong, and the Company achieved high levels of performance across many of the TSM protocols. On over 200 indicators, only one is below level A.
In 2022, Agnico Eagle continued the implementation of the TSM Climate Change Protocol by completing the physical risk assessment at each facility and at the corporate level. The Company released its first standalone Climate Change Action Report, aligned with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework, in which it committed to a Net-Zero target by 2050 and an interim target of a 30% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 (based on 2021 levels).
Agnico Eagle’s facilities achieved level A or above for all the indicators of the TSM Tailings Management Protocol. In 2022, Pinos Altos finalized implementation of the new version of their Tailings Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance Manual and an internal audit confirmed compliance with TSM guidance. For more information on Agnico Eagle’s commitment and approach to responsible tailings management, consult the Company’s most recent Tailings Summary Report.
Protecting the health and safety of employees and contractors is fundamental to the long-term success of the Company and is a non-negotiable element of a good and sustainable business. The Company continued to develop tools and training to support the optimum use and success of the Supervision Formula across all its sites and continued to advance its Towards Zero Accidents health and safety initiative.
TSM Implementation Process at Fosterville, Macassa and Detour Lake
Fosterville, Macassa and Detour Lake mines, which joined Agnico Eagle following the merger of equals with Kirkland Lake Gold in February 2022, are at their first year of TSM implementation. Corporate support is provided to ensure completion of the process and continuous improvement. TSM results for these sites will be made public at the end of 2024.
