Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Performance Summary
Agnico Eagle started implementing TSM in 2011 and applies TSM’s best practices across its operating mines globally while striving to improve overall performance annually. Each site has dedicated personnel who implement and monitor the TSM protocols and best practices. Agnico Eagle’s TSM performance is part of its overall approach to sustainability. TSM requirements are integrated into the Company’s Risk Management and Monitoring System (RMMS) that also encompasses other international standards and frameworks, such as:
- The World Gold Council’s Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMP);
- The International Cyanide Management Institute’s International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC); and
- The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR).
Agnico Eagle has used the TSM Responsible Sourcing Alignment Supplement since 2023 to integrate the RGMP requirements in its overall annual TSM assessment and external verification.
2024 External Verification
Seven (7) of Agnico Eagle’s eleven (11) operations were externally verified in 2024: LaRonde, Goldex, Canadian Malartic, Meadowbank, Kittilä, Pinos Altos and La India.
The external verification confirmed that the results reported are an accurate reflection of Agnico Eagle’s performance against the requirements of TSM. The verification, combined with an external audit of protocols, confirmed increased scores in many areas, with more than 75% of the indicators reaching the excellence and leadership level (AAA).
The results achieved in the Tailings Management Protocol are particularly worthy of mention, where all indicators for all sites assessed against this protocol and audited in 2024 reached level AAA, reflecting the efforts put towards the implementation of strong governance and tailings management systems.
Indigenous and Community Relations Protocol results also confirmed Agnico Eagle’s leadership position in that area. To that effect, we published our first Reconciliation Action Plan in 2024, setting out our approach to reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Our Indigenous Peoples Engagement Policy was also refreshed to further align with all our initiatives.
Reporting for the first time at Fosterville, Macassa and Detour Lake
The Fosterville, Macassa and Detour Lake mines concluded their three-year TSM implementation period in 2024. As a result, Agnico Eagle is now reporting the outcomes for these operations for the first time. The sites’ action plans effectively improved their management systems and sustainability performance, increasing scores by approximately 40% compared to the last internal evaluation. Actions are ongoing, with external verification expected in 2025.
Continuous Improvement Plan
Continuous improvement is a core aspect in implementing Towards Sustainable Mining at Agnico Eagle. In 2024, notable improvements were made in the management of health and safety, integrated risk, water and climate change.
Regarding health and safety, Agnico Eagle is currently implementing the Safe, Healthy, and Respectful Workplaces Protocol, modifying systems and practices to better address psychological safety. Following the release of the Psychological Health and Safety Policy in 2023, action plans were developed to equip sites and employees with the necessary tools to promote healthy workplaces. These efforts are integrated with initiatives focused on equity, diversity and inclusion, as they acknowledge that respectful and inclusive environments also enhance psychological safety.
The update of Agnico Eagle integrated risk management system (RMMS) advanced risk management efforts by enhancing the Major Hazards program. This includes the progressive implementation of a critical controls monitoring program.
In 2024, a new Water Management Framework was introduced at all sites and they reviewed their Corporate Standards to strengthen water management.
Finally, climate change continues to be integrated into our governance as tools and methodologies are being developed to enhance understanding and stay abreast of new technologies and advancements in the field. Agnico Eagle Mines published a second Climate Action Report in 2024.
