As one of Canada’s leading mining companies, Teck is committed to responsible mining and mineral development with major business unit focused on copper, zinc, and steelmaking coal, as well as investments in energy assets. Headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Teck owns or has an interest in 10 operating mines in North and South America, as well as one large metallurgical complex and several major development projects in the Americas. TSM Results

All of Teck’s operations apply TSM, and all Canadian operations publicly report their TSM results. Teck’s Canadian operations include Highland Valley Copper (HVC) and Trail operations in British Columbia as well as four steelmaking coal operations in British Columbia: Elkview, Fording River, Greenhills and Line Creek.

In 2021, two of Teck’s operations, Line Creek and Highland Valley Copper, underwent TSM external verification. PricewaterhouseCoopers provided external verification of all required TSM Protocols for performance indicator results; except the TSM Tailings Management Protocol. Priscu and Associates Consulting Engineers Inc. provided external verification of the TSM Tailings Management Protocol and were specifically chosen for their expertise in tailings management. Internal verification for other operations was performed by Teck head office and BU/site personnel.  The external and internal verification actitivies assessed Teck’s reported performance indicator results for the year ending December 31, 2021, as measured against the requirements of MAC’s TSM Performance Indicators.

Teck’s overall results for 2021 were strong, and the company achieved high levels of performance across many of the TSM protocols. Of note, Line Creek Operations and Highland Valley Copper were assessed against MAC’s new Indigenous and Community Relationships Protocol (2019), which is one year ahead of the MAC transition period for implementation of the new version of this Protocol.

Teck’s performance in TSM is part of their overall approach to sustainability and responsible resource development. Through their sustainability strategy, Teck has identified the following long-term strategic priorities for its work in sustainability: Climate Change, Water, Tailings, Responsible Production, Biodiversity and Reclamation, Health & Safety, Our People, and Communities & Indigenous Peoples. Within each area, Teck has set short-term and long-term goals and targets to continually enhance sustainability performance and assess progress, which the company reports on in its annual sustainability report.
