Climate Change

Advancing Sustainable Development Goals When following the Climate Change Protocol, mining companies work to advance the Sustainable Development Goals . • Reducing energy demand onsite and incorporating renewable energy and other low carbon energy technologies into the mine infrastructure • Improving energy efficiency through investments in innovative processes and technologies throughout a mine’s operations • Improving resilience to climate- related risks by putting in place effective adaptation measures • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reporting publicly the targets and measures in place to achieve further reductions • Upgrading infrastructure to incorporate clean technologies and industrial processes, reducing carbon emissions Case Study: Wind Power in Northern Quebec Glencore’s Raglan Mine is well situated to take advantage of the power of wind. In 2014, the company completed the construction of a 120-metre-high wind turbine and storage facility, the largest in Quebec. Like most other northern mines, the off-grid Raglan Mine is heavily dependent on diesel to fuel its operations. With climate change considerations and rising diesel costs, there was a strong business case to explore renewable energy solutions. In its first year, the 3-megawatt wind turbine saved 2.1 million litres of diesel and reduced GHG emissions by 5.85 kilotons. Raglan Mine now has two wind turbines that together lower the GHG emissions of the mine by 12,000 tonnes each year, the equivalent of 2,700 vehicles removed from the roads. Case Study: The Future of Mining is Electric Newmont’s 100 percent owned Borden mine is located near Chapleau, Ontario and features state-of-the art health and safety controls, digital mining technologies and processes, and low-carbon energy vehicles – all anchored in a mutually beneficial partnership with local communities. Borden achieved commercial production in October 2019. Bo rden’s electric underground fleet will eliminate diesel particulate matter from the underground environment and lower greenhouse gas emissions. This will help reduce energy costs, protect employee health, and minimize impacts to the environment.
