Energy Use and GHG Emissions Management

There is a natural synergy between mining and clean energy technology. Raw materials are transformed into technologies that, in turn, assist mining operations in reducing their environmental footprints and enhancing efficiency and reliability. These same raw materials are also enabling the world to transition to a low carbon future. Canada has rich deposits of many of the minerals and metals needed in renewable energy technologies. For example, Canada is home to 14 of the 19 metals and minerals needed to make a solar panel. An offset is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that is reduced, avoided, or captured and stored to compensate for emissions occurring at a mine site or processing facility. In addition to directly reducing emissions at a mine site, a company can purchase offsets from independent organizations that have achieved certified emissions reductions elsewhere in the world.
