Advancing Sustainable Development Goals When following the Indigenous and Community Relationships Protocol, mining companies and communities work together to advance the Sustainable Development Goals . • Identifying and prioritizing opportunities to benefit from mining – for example, through local procurement and employment • Developing joint action plans to optimize benefits, identify and set targets, track metrics and review effectiveness • Contributing to local development initiatives • Recognizing opportunities for collaboration with Indigenous communities – such as local education, training, employment, business and revenue opportunities and economic development practices Case Study: Monitoring Traditional Food Sources I n northern Saskatchewan, Canadian uranium company Cameco Corporation supports meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities. A community-based program in the Athabasca basin was established in 2000 to map harvesting areas for traditional foods and test these foods to ensure that they remain safe for consumption. This is just one of many initiatives that has resulted from a longstanding agreement with them. Through this type of partnership, Cameco offers training and employment to community members, who are responsible for leading interviews, mapping harvesting sites, taking samples of foods for analysis, and communicating this information to the broader community. Case Study: Fostering Indigenous Talent I n the Nunavik territory of Northern Quebec, Glencore’s Raglan Mine has strong commitments to collaborate with local Inuit communities. Their Tamatumani –“second start” in Inuktitut– program has helped to increase Inuit employment at the company by 123% since 2008. As of 2019, 22% of the mine’s workers were Nunavimmiut– that is, Inuit peoples from Nunavik. Designed in partnership with the community, the Tamatumani program provides technical and basic skills training and supports the integration of new Inuit staff. An Inuit Employment Centre manages the entire staffing process, maintains a bank of interested candidates and visits Nunavik communities to raise awareness of available positions.
