Driving towards a low-carbon future…and a responsible one too.

The mining industry will play an essential role in the transition to a low carbon future by providing the building blocks of clean and low energy technologies. In fact, the growing adoption of these technologies is increasing the demand for minerals and metals.

At the same, customers increasingly want to know that the raw materials in their products were mined responsibly. This is where MAC’s Towards Sustainable Mining® (TSM®) comes in.

TSM® is driving performance improvement in how mining operations protect the environment and engage with their communities. Through TSM, Canada’s mining industry is providing the responsibly-sourced minerals and metals that power electric vehicles, including metallurgical coal, nickel, copper, iron ore, zinc, cobalt, and many more.

TSM can help demonstrate responsible sourcing as it produces site-level performance data in key environmental and social areas. These include how companies engage with local and Indigenous communities, how they manage biodiversity conservation and tailings, and how they protect worker and community safety and health.

Recently, MAC became a member of ResponsibleSteel™ to share its expertise with TSM and to help develop the mining component of a new global standard for a responsible steel supply chain. We’re also working with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance to ensure that their tailings standard is consistent with TSM’s stringent requirements.
