OTTAWA, August 22, 2024– The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) is pleased to announce that Fariza Makhayeva and Robert Jordan have been awarded the 2024 Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarship in Mineral Economics. This annual scholarship recognizes the work being done by some of Canada’s most innovative minds pursuing advanced degrees in business administration or economics.
“Each year, we are consistently impressed by the caliber of candidates from across Canada who, while pursuing their studies, bring forward innovative ideas that will help our sector continue making essential contributions for the benefit of all Canadians,” said Pierre Gratton, President and CEO of the Mining Association of Canada. “These students represent the best of the best, and this year was no exception. The competition was so strong that it was impossible this year to choose just one candidate. We are thrilled to award this year’s scholarship to two individuals, Fariza Makhayeva and Robert Jordan.”
Since its inception in 2012, MAC and its members have awarded the Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarship in Mineral Economics to support the educational endeavours of students committed to advancing the Canadian mining industry and who show a passion for the minerals sector.
Fariza Makhayeva brings many years of experience in mining, ore processing, and metallurgy, where she has successfully led and managed due diligence engagements and independently developed financial models for both operating and greenfield mining assets. Robert Jordan adds unique expertise from his work on the Baffinland port expansion and with global mining engineering consulting firms. Both candidates have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement in their pursuit of a Master of Business Administration and a deep commitment to advancing the mining sector, making them stand out as ideal recipients of this year’s scholarship.
Fariza Makyaheva
“I am incredibly grateful to receive the Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarship,” said Fariza Makhayeva. “This scholarship is a tremendous boost as I continue to explore ways to advance the Canadian mining industry. My MBA experience has been instrumental in shaping my strategic thinking, particularly in understanding the importance of integrating sustainability and innovation into business practices. I’m eager to contribute to Canada’s mining sector by promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices and helping Canada become a leading developer of critical minerals essential for the global green transition and a more sustainable future.”
Robert Jordan
“I am deeply grateful for MAC’s support in advancing my education,” said Robert Jordan. “The mining sector has been pivotal in my career, offering me the opportunity to work in diverse and unique locations across Canada and the world. As I continue to grow in my profession, I am excited to remain actively engaged in the meaningful work within Canada’s mining industry, contributing to its growth and its vital role in supporting local communities and the global energy transition.”
The mining industry is a major sector of Canada’s economy, contributing $125 billion to the national GDP and is responsible for 22 percent of Canada’s total domestic exports. Canada’s mining sector employs 665,000 people directly and indirectly across the country. The industry is proportionally the largest private sector employer of Indigenous peoples in Canada and a major customer of Indigenous-owned businesses.
