Newmont Corporation

Newmont is the world’s leading gold company and a producer of copper, silver, zinc and lead. The company’s world-class portfolio of assets, prospects and talent is anchored in favorable mining jurisdictions in North America, South America, Australia and Africa. Newmont is the only gold producer listed in the S&P 500 Index and is widely recognized for its principled environmental, social and governance practices. Newmont is proud to be consistently ranked as one of the most transparent companies in the S&P 500 and as the mining industry co-leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the seventh consecutive year. The Company is an industry leader in value creation, supported by robust safety standards, superior execution and technical proficiency. Newmont was founded in 1921 and has been publicly traded since 1925. In November 2023, Newmont acquired Newcrest Mining which introduced the Brucejack and Red Chris mines in British Columbia into our portfolio.

Newmont has actively operating mines in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Mexico, Peru, Suriname and the US, and a robust exploration and project pipeline further strengthens our global portfolio. With over 100 years of operations, our purpose is to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining. Our strategy is to lead the gold sector in creating value for shareholders and other stakeholders by delivering superior operational execution; sustaining a global portfolio of long-life assets, and leading in profitability and responsibility.

Our values of Safety, Integrity, Sustainability, Inclusion, and Responsibility reflect our commitment to act responsibly as individuals and as a business. We are powered by a core belief that our people are as important as the assets we operate. We are committed to the responsible management of resources such as land, air quality, water and biodiversity, as well as putting the health and safety of our people first.

Newmont and TSM

Three of Newmont’s Canadian operating sites, as well as the North America Regional Office in Vancouver actively participate in TSM. Our Canadian operating sites currently participating in TSM include Musselwhite and Porcupine in Ontario, as well as Éléonore in Quebec. The Brucejack and Red Chris mines in British Columbia were added to our portfolio in late 2023. Newmont is assessing its approach for bringing these mines into the TSM program.

In 2023, Newmont participated in TSM Post-Verification Reviews for 2022 results. As part of this process Newmont drafted a Post-Verification Review paper providing a sustainability overview of Newmont’s Canadian operations. Following the submission of the paper, Newmont representatives were required to present and answer questions before a TSM Post-Verification Review panel of experts in Calgary, Alberta.

Newmont had strong results across all TSM protocols in 2023. Areas of strength included Biodiversity and Conservation Management where all sites maintain a AAA status for all indicators and Safety & Health and Water Stewardship where all sites maintain an A status or higher. Providing value and benefit to the host-communities we operate within is central for Newmont and we continue to score well in the area of Indigenous and Community Relationships. Tailings management and our responsibilities around long-term risk is a top priority for Newmont and we were proud to score AAA ratings for all Tailings Management indicators at the Porcupine operation, where there has been mining activity for over 100 years.

Newmont strives to continually improve its TSM performance. We are pleased to have improved our Crisis Management and Communications Planning protocols over the past several years with all indicators now being sufficiently met. The TSM Climate Change indicators are an area of improvement, partially due to the challenges of operating rural and remote mines. However, Newmont is proud to be demonstrating its commitment to electrification with a recent ground-breaking $100m investment into a partnership with Caterpillar to develop and deliver a fully connected, automated, zero carbon emitting, end-to-end mining system.
