Arctic Canadian Diamond Company was acquired by Burgundy Diamond Mines in 2023. Burgundy Diamond Mines is a premier global diamond company that proudly produces and delivers ethically sourced diamonds from its world-renowned Ekati Diamond Mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories to market. Arctic Canadian Diamond Company remains as a wholly owned subsidiary of Burgundy Diamond Mines Ltd.
Burgundy’s unique end-to-end business model with total chain of custody provides unquestionable diamond origin and traceability along every step of the process, providing the ability to safeguard the ethical production of its diamonds from mining to marketing and discovery to design. Burgundy is part of CanadaMark™, a program that assures manufacturers, retailers and customers, that Burgundy Diamonds are sustainably produced and support ethical investment in Canadian Northern Indigenous communities. Burgundy Diamond Mines Limited is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX:BDM).
In addition to its Canadian mining operations, Burgundy has offices in Belgium and Perth, Australia.
For Burgundy, performance means delivering sustainable growth by investing in the future. That involves supporting excellence in leadership and delivering on the commitment of zero harm: to the company’s own people, through consistent and risk-based work practices; to its host communities, through communication and the inclusion of their opinions and concerns in mine plans and mine-life extension projects; and to the environment, through innovative adaptive management and intensive monitoring of the mine’s impact.
Burgundy is proud of the Ekati mine’s performance, which celebrated 25 years of operation in October 2023, and is dedicated to building on its legacy. The company will continue to work closely with its impact benefit agreement (IBA) groups, maintaining a focus on the empowerment and sustainability of northern communities.
Burgundy will use TSM reporting to drive continuous improvement across the company’s operations. This extra level of self-regulation adds value because processes will be reviewed from a different reporting perspective than would be the case under other HSEC (health, safety, environment and community) and ISO audits.
Historically, biodiversity conservation management, Indigenous and community relations, and crisis management and communications planning are areas where the Ekati mine has consistently performed well. Since taking ownership, Burgundy has met regularly with stakeholders to share information about its operations and future plans and to hear feedback on decisions that may affect them. The Ekati mine has created community development plans that focus the company on where its efforts will make the most difference. Burgundy has inherited the IBAs, which are in place until the end of mine life, and Burgundy is in ongoing dialogue with its IBA partners to explore additional community development initiatives.
Burgundy continues to make considerable effort in the stewardship of the environment. These efforts are on track in terms of understanding and conserving biodiversity, effectively disposing of processed kimberlite, executing energy reduction projects, and managing water quality.
Burgundy is committed to fulfilling its vision of strengthening and deepening its relationships with community stakeholders and extending mine life. The company is striving to make developments to the Ekati mine’s socioeconomic and environmental records where sustainable resource development and community growth are paramount. By incorporating traditional knowledge and feedback from community partners, Burgundy will become better at what it does. The company genuinely cares about its people and wants to make investments that have long-lasting benefits.
