National Mining Association Scholarship Recipient to Research Innovative Environmental Sustainability Techniques for Canada’s Mining Sector

Today, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) is pleased to announce that Poonam Madan has been awarded the 2018 Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarship in Mineral Economics. This annual scholarship recognizes the work being done by some of Canada’s most innovative minds currently pursuing degrees in economics, mineral economics or mining commerce.

“Each year, we are impressed by the caliber of entries received from individuals across Canada who are in the midst of their studies and who have exciting ideas regarding research and innovation in the mining sector,” said Pierre Gratton, MAC’s President and CEO. “These students represent the best of the best, and this year we are excited to recognize and support the work of Poonam Madan, who not only has industry experience, but also has a strong research commitment to environmental sustainability, which is a top priority for our sector. We are pleased that this scholarship will be used towards her MBA studies, and look forward to seeing what she will accomplish in her future work with the mining sector.”

Since its inception in 2012, MAC and its members have utilized the Paul Stothart Memorial Scholarship to support the educational endeavors of students committed to advancing the Canadian mining industry and who show a passion for the minerals sector.

“I am thrilled to have the support of MAC and this scholarship,” said Poonam Madan, currently a student at Athabasca University in Edmonton in addition to being a Senior Sustainability Advisor at Sherritt. “The MBA program has emphasized the importance of sustainability in a company’s business strategy and the courses in this program have enabled me to better articulate the competitive advantages to industry that result from implementing these practices. Through my studies and, as I move forward in my career, I am looking forward to supporting sustainability initiatives in the mining sector and ensuring that climate policies, social equity and other key concerns are prioritized as Canada’s mining industry continues to evolve.”

The mining industry is a major sector of Canada’s economy, contributing $57.6 billion to national GDP and responsible for 19 percent of the value of Canadian goods exports in 2016. Canada’s mining sector employs 596,000 people directly and indirectly across the country. The industry is proportionally the largest private sector employer of Indigenous peoples in Canada and a major customer of Indigenous-owned businesses.
