Performance Summary for Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM)
In 2023, MMC began implementing TSM, with the objective of progressively deploying TSM best practices throughout operational mines while anticipating year after year improvement in overall performance. MMC aims to use technology and innovate in the same to produce quality products safely at the lowest cost. MMC continues to contribute to the development of technical standards in the global extractive industry. The Company built and commissioned a Belt Filter Press (“BFP”) facility at the Coal handling and preparation plant (“CHPP”), designed to extract water for reuse from the fine tailings previously recycled through the tailings storage facility. The method nearly quadruples the quantity of water recycled from the fine tailings stream, from 35% to 70%, by eliminating evaporation losses in the tailings storage facility (“TSF”). The implementation of the belt filter press plant for treating CHPP tailings has improved water recycling rates, reducing water extraction and environmental footprint with cost benefit meaning the company does not require to have any tailings. The connection to the Mongolian Central Energy System allows the UHG Power Plant to operate at full coal-fired capacity by permitting energy supply to third-party customers, hence offering a chance to minimize unit costs associated with power generation. MMC is on a roadmap to set performance targets for the facility in terms of energy and GHG emissions in 2024. As part of the commitment to being a socially responsible partner of choice, MMC has newly adopted TSM at the site and will continue to use the TSM protocols to guide activities through the closure process.
The corporation is more devoted than ever to enhancing its performance under the TSM program.
