Suncor’s 2024 TSM Internal Assessment Results
In June 2024, the federal government passed amendments to the Competition Act that created significant uncertainty regarding communications about the work to improve our environmental performance, including actions and plans to address climate change. Due to this ambiguity and how the new law will be interpreted, Suncor has temporarily refrained from any public statements related to environmental strategy, ambition and commitment. This has in turn impacted those TSM ratings related to public disclosure and reporting of strategy and/or progress for the current assessment year.
Suncor remains fully committed to environmental performance, sustainable development, the work we are doing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our related ambitions. We believe we, along with industry, have a key role to play in helping Canada reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and meet its climate ambitions, while also supporting a vibrant economy, improving environmental performance and providing Canadians with secure access to affordable energy.
Internal 2024 assessment results for Suncor’s oil sands Base Plant and Fort Hills mine facilities reflect performance to the date they are published, where feasible, and are aligned with TSM’s annual reporting timeline.
Biodiversity Conservation Management
Biodiversity aspects are integrated into Suncor’s business plans, strategies and reporting. This is reflected in the rating of AA or higher in all indicators for both facilities.
Climate Change
Due to the Competition Act amendments and risks related to public reporting of strategies and targets, ratings for the Corporate Climate Change Management indicator and both Suncor facility’s Performance Targets and Reporting indicator were assessed at Level B. Both facility’s Climate Change Management indicator was assessed at Level A.
Crisis Management and Communications Planning
Both Suncor facilities meet all the requirements of this protocol and maintain a “Yes” rating for the three indicators. Business risks are identified, and response plans have been established, including an incident command system which is tested regularly.
Indigenous and Community Relationships
Suncor’s engagement with Indigenous Peoples and stakeholders is guided by a relationship framework which highlights the company’s commitment to collaboration, transparency and respect for all points of view. Suncor maintains Level AAA ratings for both facilities in all indicators except Effective COI Engagement and Dialogue in which the rating decreased from Level AAA, as previously assessed, to B. This is a consequence of public reporting limitations due to the Competition Act amendments noted above.
Safety and Health
Suncor demonstrates a strong commitment and accountability to health and safety, with established policies and commitments across the organization. Both facilities rate at Level A or higher in all indicators.
Tailings Management
The tailings management system for both facilities underwent an external TSM audit in 2022. This audit confirmed Level AAA ratings for all indicators. The next external audit is planned for 2025.
Water Stewardship
Suncor’s approach to water management is reflected in our ratings of Level A or higher in three indicators for both facilities. The rating for Water Performance and Reporting decreased from AAA in previous assessments to B due to the Competition Act amendments noted above.
