IAMGOLD is an intermediate gold producer and developer based in Canada with operating mines in North America and West Africa. The Company is building the large-scale, long life Côté Gold project in Canada in partnership with Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd., which is expected to commence production in early 2024. In addition, the Company has an established portfolio of early stage and advanced exploration projects within high potential mining districts in Canada.
Guided by the vision to achieve Zero Harm®, IAMGOLD conducts mining activities with a commitment to reaching the highest standards in human health and safety, minimizing impacts on the environment, and working cooperatively with host communities. The Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative is strongly embedded in IAMGOLD’s Sustainability Standard, operating practices and pursuit of excellence.
IAMGOLD has participated in the TSM initiative for its operations in Canada and abroad since 2007. This 2023 self-assessment demonstrated strong performance across Indigenous and Community Relation; Tailings Management; and Water. It also highlighted several opportunities for continuous improvement. Following the self-assessment, IAMGOLD is actively working on developing action plans to achieve and/or maintain high ratings of Level A or greater across all protocols. In 2024, IAMGOLD will undergo an external audit of the 2024 TSM self-assessment regarding IAMGOLD-managed operations and the Company’s head office.
TSM PROTOCOLS
Indigenous and Community Relationship
The Essakane mine was assessed in 2023 to meet or exceed Level AAA across all five indicators. The Westwood Mine was assessed to meet or exceed Level C across all five indicators of this protocol.
Climate Change
The Essakane and Westwood mines were assessed in 2023 to meet or exceed Level C across all three indicators of this protocol. In September 2021, IAMGOLD announced an ambitious plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. In December 2023, the Company released its 2022 Climate Action Report, establishing its target of achieving 30% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. The approach continues to be focused on both medium- and long-term targets, with the 2030 target being the Company’s immediate priority as it works towards its 2050 target. Tailings Management
Essakane and Westwood mines were assessed in 2023 to meet or exceed Level A across all five indicators of this protocol. The results of the self-assessment against this protocol were verified by IAMGOLD’s internal technical and risk and audit teams.
Biodiversity Conservation Management
The Essakane mine was assessed in 2023 to meet or exceed Level A across all three indicators. The Westwood mine was assessed to meet or exceed Level C across all indicators. IAMGOLD is conducting a gap assessment that will inform the develop of an action plan to improve the planning, implementation, and communication of this protocol across all of its sites.
Safety and Health
Essakane mine was assessed in 2023 to meet or exceed Level AA across all five indicators. Westwood Mine was assessed to meet or exceed Level B across all five indicators of this protocol.
Crisis Management and Communications Planning
Essakane mine, Westwood mine and Corporate were assessed as a “no” in 2023 for crisis management and communications preparedness (indicator 1). Essakane and Westwood mine were assessed as a “no” in 2023 for review (indicator 2), while Corporate was assessed as a “yes”. Preventing Child and Forced Labour
Essakane and Westwood mines were assessed in 2023 to have processes in place to meet the requirements of this protocol.
Water Stewardship
Essakane and Westwood were assessed in 2023 to meet or exceed Level A across all four indicators of this protocol.
