How Verification Works
Within Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM), a process of external verification was established to ensure that companies’ reporting on TSM performance indicators is consistent, accurate and transparent.
Every three years, a trained and accredited verifier critically reviews a company’s self-assessments to determine if there is adequate evidence to support the performance ratings reported. Verifiers are experienced independent auditors and technical experts. If necessary, verifiers can change companies’ self-assessed ratings to ensure they accurately reflect evidence of the facility’s management practices and performance.
In conducting an external verification, the verifier and the company that they are verifying must adhere to the requirements of the Terms of Reference for Verifiers, linked below. This includes requirements such as: advance notice of the verification to communities of interest, recognized audit credentials for verifiers, and a quality review of verifications by a third party.
Becoming a TSM Verifier
To become a TSM verifier, please confirm that you meet the conditions outlined in the TSM Terms of Reference for Verifiers. The Copper Mark and TSM have recently consolidated their assessor pools. Both organizations now share a common list of approved individual assessors, supporting consistency and alignment across assurance frameworks.
New verifier applications for 2026 are currently closed to focus resources on the transition toward the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI). Any additional verifier needs will be considered on a case-by-case basis, where required to support programme delivery and maintain assurance capacity.

TSM Verification Oversight Process
The TSM verification oversight process aims to ensure that active verifiers conform with the Terms of Reference for Verifiers and that they demonstrate sound interpretation and application of TSM protocol requirements. The process includes direct oversight of verifiers, a general evaluation of effectiveness of certain elements of TSM verification, and an annual report to share findings and recommendations.
